Nov. 13th, 2000 01:42 pmright. this is a 5 o'clock people song. they're a christian band. and is it just me or are there homosexual themes and implications oozing from every pore in this song? and if so, what exactly are they implying?
some of the stuff i got out of it: puzzle was the name of the donkey in one of the later narnia books (which as we all know are a religious allegory), who was exploited and forced to dress up like aslan by the monkey whose name i've forgotten.
stories say that mary rode a donkey to bethlehem (we had a kids book called 'the donkey's dream') and that jesus rode a donkey into jerusalem. any other donkey legends they could be drawing from?
what is the puzzle in this song?
is the person referred to in the song jesus or judas? he seems to be associated with mercy and forgiveness, but also with deciet and a kiss. is the singer judas?

puzzle (the donkey's lament)
words & music by alex walker
underneath my skin / underneath my soul
puzzle wore a lion skin. who are you?
somewhere deep within / only i could know
i don't know his name / only know his face
who is he? what face does he have?
only know the shame / i can't quite erase
what shame?
and i can see him as he walks my way
i can taste his tender kiss
why did he kiss you?
and i can feel him standing over me in the darkness
what are you doing? why is he standing over you?
it is not for me / but for him to judge
what is he judging you for?
he tells me this must be / all for my own good
is he telling the truth?
see me through his eyes / by my fears betrayed
what (or to whom) did your fears betray (you)?
so much to despise / i'm ugly and afraid
is that what you see through his eyes, or do *you* think that you're ugly?
and i can see him as he walks my way
i can burn under his kiss
why does it burn? painfully or like a blush?
and i can feel him lying next to me in the darkness
what are you (two) doing?
look into his face / this one who calls me friend
do you call him your friend as well?
shows me now my place / silent and condemned
ie he condemns you? and with silence, are you not allowed to ask for forgiveness?
bend me though i break / dry me till i see
drying makes you more brittle. what do you see? and must you be broken to see?
must do what it takes / destroy my faith in me
he must or you must?
and i can see him as he walks away
is he walking away because he condemns you?
i can feel his empty stare
empty = without compassion?
and sometimes i wonder if he even knows I'm there
if his stare is empty, does he know *anyone's* there?
i can see him as he walks away
i burn under his kiss
he walks away and then kisses you?
and i can hear him lying in my ear in the darkness
what is he lying about?
does a savior speak / of things i cannot see
does grace count as a thing?
is it you i seek / or is it just me
is 'you' the same as 'he'?
gone without a trace / my deceitful friend
so the burn from his kiss is gone too?
is this not my place / am i not condemned
what relation to the previous line? are you asking cause you aren't sure?
and i can feel mercy breathing through me
mercy brings you back to life?
as freedom weeps within
why does freedom weep at mercy? tears of joy?
and i am gasping just to hear that voice again
association of breath - his voice is mercy?
and i can feel him rushing over me
usually spirit rushed, god breathes into. why is this the other way?
i can feel my rags replaced
anything to do with your skin in the first verse?
and i've been struck down damned forgiven
saved by grace
is this a logical progression - ie you have to be damned before you can recieve grace?
and i can feel mercy breathing through me
as freedom weeps within
and i am gasping just to hear that voice again
and i am gasping just to hear that voice again
and i am gasping just to hear that voice again
is his voice the most important thing, not the mercy or grace? and why 'that' voice, not 'his' voice?
