I'll be in Manassas next week, from 1/3 to 1/6. Anyone want to do something Sunday evening?
shadowsong: (Default)
And so the Shortest Day came and the year died
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen;
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive.
And when the new year's sunshine blazed awake
They shouted, revelling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing behind us - listen!
All the long echoes, sing the same delight,
This Shortest Day,
As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.
And now so do we, here, now,
This year and every year.

-Susan Cooper

I'm weeding my bookshelf, and I have three cookbooks I thought I'd try out on you guys before I unload them at the used book store:
Fabulous Feasts: Medieval Cookery and Ceremony by Madeleine Pelner Cosman
To the King's Taste: Richard II's book of feasts and recipies, adapted for modern cooking by Lorna J. Sass
To the Queen's Taste: Elizabethan feasts and recipes, adapted for modern cooking by Lorna J. Sass

Both the Sass books are signed by the author, to my mother. Another reason I'd like them to go to a friend instead of the bookstore. (And yes, Mother, I am certainly willing to give any of these back to you. :))

delicious eggs: warm up a wet pan on medium low heat. when the water has all evaporated put in eggs + 1/2 tbsp butter per egg. stir until butter dissolves. turn up heat just a wee bit, keep stirring. when the eggs have solidified enough that you can scrape them into one section of the pan and they'll more or less stay there, remove from heat. add a 1/2 tbsp neutral cultured milk product (creme fraiche, sour cream, plain yogurt, ricotta, cottage cheese) and stir. glop onto bread, add some salt and pepper and thyme. eat with gusto.

I've decided to clean up my music collection. I know I have multiple copies of a lot of stuff, some of which are ripped from scratched cds. I want a program that will find duplicates, and delete the dupes with skips, glitches, or lower quality. I found a few promising programs - do any of you have experience with these, or another program that you'd recommend instead?

MP3Test
MP3 Analyzer in Helium Music Manager
ENCSpot MP3 Analyzer
MP3 Tag Studio

So... any of you guys have access to a subscription for The Sixteenth Century Journal?

Also, Belfebe and Violante (if she reads this), can you give me a crash course in mujedars and moriscos in spain during the 16th century? How about quinquilleros/mercheros during the same period?
