Feb. 18th, 2002 05:50 ami finished my paper. other than the fact that a lot of it seems like bs because i couldn't find sources, i think it's pretty good. i got to the page limit and had 2 more topics i wanted to talk about, which was neat. i just got too tired to type more. :)
i hope i don't get points taken off because i didn't mention vogel's desdemona. the essay topic mentioned des and an essay we read, and the question was does othello deserve to be critiqued by a feminist play like des or is it daring and subversive of the values of the time?
the thing is, i don't think vogel's desdemona is about othello at all. it's about modern society's views of women, using the story of othello as a device through which to critique society. as such, it's irrelevant to my essay. :)
the problem is that steven really likes vogel. another guy is afraid steven will give him a bad grade because he bashes desdemona all through his paper, where as i just ignored it. and the last sentence of the topic is "discuss, drawing on fresh evidence from the play as well as from newman's article or vogel's desdemona'. although i did mention newman once, so maybe i'm okay?
and i get four hours of sleep! well, 3.5. go me. :) my room is filthy and dammit i am *not* going to clean it instead of going to sleep. ::sigh::

Feb. 18th, 2002 02:12 pmso i managed to upset someone a little while ago in a comment thread. part of what she said didn't make sense to me, so i assumed it must not have come across the way she meant it to. i expounded on that for a paragraph, and she responded with a sarcastic self deprecating comment. i didn't imply anything like what she said when i commented, so i assumed that she must be joking and responded in kind. then she got upset. i deleted my posts. i was going to post a response, 'obviously i'm the one with the communication problem. sorry for upsetting you,' but when i got back from class she'd deleted her posts as well.
i'm fairly sure that while part of the problem was miscommunication, the rest of it is that we disagree on the issue we were discussing. i don't feel the need to convince her that my opinion is right, so in the interest of not causing more angst, i merely dropped the thread.
i don't think that conceding (ie not challenging the other person's view) is necessarily passive. talking is what caused the problem, so explaining further would only make it worse. even if it's all due to miscommunication, if someone is upset, it's too late for explanations.
skreidle, i have a feeling you might disagree. thoughts?
i think part of the reason i concede in these things is because i don't think it's necessary to 'win' before stopping. sure, i think my opinion is right. for me. other people are not me, so their opinions can be just as valid for me. the phrase 'your mileage may vary' exists for a reason.
of course, my view on other people's opinions being valid is applicable mostly to abstract philosophical things. when it comes to issues like politics, i concede in recognition that their views are just as entrenched as mine are, and a simple flame war isn't going to change that.
