monday:
opening ceremonies, which meant i sat around and did nothing for quite a while. i think i may have done some pickups, but i could be wrong. oh! right! i didn't do pickups, i went to a bodhran class. unless that was saturday, which it probably was. nevertheless, i went to the class cause i thought there was a lot of stuff i didn't know. there wasn't. i'm pretty good as such things go.

now that i think about it, maybe the first fort battle was monday. that was lots of fun... schlager only, with rubber band guns. catalina isn't schlager authorized, so she wore a belt with two pistols in it and carried two daggers, and waded in grinning like a fiend. most of the atlantians ended up on one side (gee, how'd that happen? what a coincidence), and we had fun mopping up. the scenario is set up such that the defenders will inevitably lose, the question is how long it takes.
the fort is new this year, and is a permanent 'snow retaining wall' outside of pennsic. it's got two main towers on either side of the main gate, and two low towers at the corner of the front wall, and a sally port on the right as you face out of the fort. and there was a rubber band cannon on the side of the attackers - 6 shots at once. soooo neat. the main gate was opened with a bomb, represented by a milk jug. it was placed at the gate and when the person who placed it said 'boom', anything within 30 feet on the outside of the fort died. as well as the main gates. the attackers had a res point outside the fort. the defenders just died.
when the atlantians attacked, we had a suicide squad run up to the door with the bomb and set it off, so it took a whole minute for the main gates to open. then it took another 7 minutes to get through the main gate and the sally port. and after that, it was just mopping up. sooooo much fun. only certain people can work the cannon, so if you kill them, it's useless until they res, and if you're quick enough, you can disable it. but yeah. lots of rubber bands everywhere.
rubberband guns are neat. they shoot rounds made of surgical tubing. if they misfire, ie the band slips as you're loading it, or shoots you in the face when you try to fire, you're dead. ::grin:: and it's kinda hard to see through a fencing mask, so if you run out of ammo, pointing the useless gun at someone tends to distract them enough for someone else to kill them. we were allowed to glean shots, which is to say picking up rounds off the ground and reusing them. the only problem with this is that there are a bunch of different sizes of guns, and they all take different sized shots. and if you get the wrong size shot, it'll misfire. great fun. :)
