Sep. 20th, 2000 12:59 pmthat was fun. :) already mentioned the afternoon wake time... tina's mum walked me to the bus station (with her walker), babbling at me the whole time. waited half an hour for a bus, decided that by the time i got to green street all the shops would be closed anyway, and went to camden market. where i found.... da da da! size 3 black 10 hole steel toe docs! and it's weird cause the regular toe size four is just barely too small. ::rolls eyes:: doc marten doesn't seem to be real good with the consistent sizing.
so i bought my shoes and went and looked at tongue bars for a while, but they didn't really have anything i wanted and then they closed. so i went down to where the concert was supposed to be.
took forever to find the venue cause tina got the name of the street wrong - manette st is easy to find. manwell st doesn't exist. grr. but i got there eventually, paid advance price for my ticket, and got rid of 20£ of the one-£ coins that the hotel gave me. (no, the tickets weren't 20£. they were 8.50£. ticket booths like change, though, so i got two crisp new (well, slightly wrinkled, and they've probably been around for a while) 10£ notes.) as i was walking out of the venue, i heard american accents behind me. turned around and there were 5 guys, who headed out to wait by the curb. one of them had a superman logoed necklace with a 3 instead of an s. i felt so bad, i just bought tickets for their concert, and i'm talking to them, and i don't know their names! (yes, the 5 guys were in fact 3 doors down.) made inane small talk - 'so, know anywhere around here to eat?' in a 'don't you hate being in unfamiliar places' tone of voice. babbled for a while to the guy i found out was todd. (i didn't find out until after the show, mind you - i was too embarrassed to ask their names.) and then i left to go get food. went to borders who had a cafe and a music section, with the intent of studying the back of the cd to learn their names, but their entire music section was closed. so i had some chai (too sweet) and a smoked salmon bagel and went to find an internet cafe.
found a nice high-speed one where 1£ gets you somewhere between 30 and 50 minutes (don't ask me why the rate changes, i was wondering that myself) and attempted to find some nice fan sites that would give me band member bios. there wasn't much but i figured it out. or i thought i did.
went back to the concert, the chick asked me if i needed to buy a ticket and i told her i already had one. doors were supposed to open at 8.30, and it was about 10 till that, but there weren't people waiting outside. she said the doors were already open, so i headed inside. no one ever asked for my ticket. ::shrug::
got a pint of cider and dropped off my coat and docs in the coat room. met an 18 year old american living in london who did an exchange program to germany during her sophomore year of high school and forgot to go home. her boyfriend, who was british, was quite the looker. very nice hair. (no, i didn't hit on him.) :)
opening band was big sur, who i swear i've heard of before. they were okay - pretty good songs, but the lead singer could use a little pitch training.
then 3 doors down came on. now, the borderline (name of the venue) is tiny. it's basically the size of most bars, with a step down for the area in front of the stage, which is crotch-eye level.
it was a really short show - the whole thing, opening band and all, went from 8.30 to 10.30. but 3dd was good - i've only heard like 3 of their songs, but it was still good. matt, their bassist, looks like séan, if séan were in a rock band. and the lead singer, brad, got the dimples. but matt's got the bleached blond thing going. :)
i eventually ended up right at the front, which was interesting. people would stick their arms up in the air, and brad would grab hands as he sang. chris, one of the guitarists (todd, who i talked to earlier, was the other one), would stand right at the edge of the stage and lean over as he played. at one point he recognized me from earlier, and i think decided i wasn't having enough fun, and reached out and clapped me on the shoulder. :) matt (the cute bassist) at one point was standing *right* on the edge of the stage, and i had a hard time fighting down the impulse to wrap my arm around his calf. :)
there were tons of americans there, mostly military i think. one guy was said he lived in cambridge and i was like, yeah, i was there a few days ago, and then i looked at his haircut and said, 'wait, are you military?' and he said he was, and i was like, 'so where are you exactly, molesworth or alconbury or what?' and he just looked at me with this shocked expression on his face and said, 'how do you know that stuff?' heheh. turns out he's from lakenheath, which cancelled their Sunday fencing due to lack of petrol.
so i waited around for a while after the set ended, got autographs of everyone but todd. with 3 of the people, i mentioned that they'd seen me earlier - chris was the first one i talked to, and i said i'd been out front earlier talking to matt. and he said, 'actually, you were talking to todd. but i remember you.' so much for my facade of 'well-informed fan'. ::sigh:: and when matt came out (the cute one, remember), slightly drunk, he was like, 'hey, don't i remember you from earlier?' without me even saying anything. it was fun. :)
if i hadn't been worried about getting home before the tube shut down, i would have stayed until they kicked everyone out, and maybe got to schmooze a little more. oh, well.
got home at 1, talked to tina for an hour, and then went upstairs and read for another two hours. oops.
and as soon as tina emails me the directions to the session tonight i'm heading out to green street for fabric.
