real time, gibbs' house, glasgow
Sep. 24th, 2000 09:34 pmwell, yesterday sucked. got off the train, wrestled my luggage to a bus, wrestled it onto the bus. there was an old asian guy sitting in one of the handicapped seats who watched while i struggled with all my stuff, and wouldn't move over, so i had to fight my way past him to the other seat. but of course i couldn't fit my luggage in there, and it overbalances, so i had to reach across him and hold onto it, and almost fell into his lap when the bus stopped suddenly. i was furious. and when other people got on, they had to squeeze past it. if i'd been sitting in the outside seat, i could have pulled it in front of my legs, but he was sitting there, so i couldn't move my luggage at all. grr. and then when i got off at the stop closest to the youth hostel, i had to walk about 5 blocks, 3 of which were uphill. with a backpack, bodhran, two bags, and a huge suitcase. and when i got to the youth hostel, i had to make a new reservation cause i never got a confirmation for the one i'd made the previous night, and the room i got was on the fourth floor. there wasn't an elevator. or there was, but it was a service elevator and no one on duty knew how to operate it. so i lugged all my stuff upstairs, and then came back down to use the net - thus my posts yesterday.
the computer was stupid as anything - i think it was just an internet box, but if you clicked on the setup/background thing, it would put all the other windows underneath, with no way to get to them. and then if you tried to open a new window it would tell you you needed to close the other ones first, but you couldn't get to them to close them. grr. and when i checked my email, i discovered a confirmation letter. so i have to call a number they gave me and make sure my credit card isn't going to be charged twice along with a cancellation fee (cause i never checked in with the confirmation number, so.... rrgh).
i went back up to my room around 8, and heather said she was going to come by and talk or something, but after waterproofing one boot and taking a nap, she still wasn't there, so i took my eyes out and put my retainers in, and was in bed by 9.30. i was *so* tired. and i woke up at 9.30, just in time to make the tail end of breakfast. looking around at everyone's zombielike morning faces made me decide that the hostel didn't put near enough caffeine in their coffee.
so today i met up with heather, meljo, and a lindsay and we went to the mall and window shopped and had food, and went to the train station and picked up two sarahs, and went to see x men, which everyone else liked more than they thought they would, and i thought was worth my money but not much more. and i only paid £3.50, which is about $5.50, and the only reason it would be worth more than that was cause claire danes is hot. other than that it was kinda cheezy.
and when we got out of the movie it was pouring, and it was a 20 minute walk back to the hostel. i was soaked by the time we got back, due to my not having a jacket.
but we all met at the harvey's house (and there was a flash of panic when we realized that jeremy wasn't there and no one had seen him since he set off to hitchhike to the orkneys, but he just showed up late) and had lots of really good food. and i get my own room at the gibbs' (nina and meljo are downstairs), and i'll be here for two weeks. plenty of time to unpack and decide what i can send home and then repack. and they have a puter, although a slow one.
day off tomorrow, then we have a lecture for overseas students on tuesday, and then nothing for the rest of the week. my parents still have my garb box at home, so i'll have to see if st. andrew's has loaner garb. they should, cause this is the first event of the season and they're trying to attract newbies, but i dunno. and i'll have to figure out how to get there and back, and if i'll need a place to stay.
i'll have to nose around in their hard drive and see if they've got enough space that i can download icq. they've certainly got enough stuff in their start menu that they'd never notice it. :)
