Sep. 15th, 2002 03:38 pmapparently, the heat in my room can be attributed wholly to my computer. it's cold in here now.
i was housesitting for tricia's dad yesterday. they (dad and stepmom) have 2 dogs, 3 cats, a cable modem, a hot tub (which i never got around to using), decent washer/dryer, an expansive garden, and a freezer full of blackberries. i made pie, and we (thu and i) had fresh potatoes and green beans and potatoes with dinner.
bedding is clean, and i'd like to clean off the other bed today and put bedding on both beds. so i have to clean up today, and put away laundry, and move things around and out of the way. i also have to read 6 articles and write something about them, before wednesday. and i need to call jo-ann's and work out a schedule.
i want to make lavender massage oil. anyone know where i can get unscented oil that won't cost me an arm and a leg?
there were a bunch of things i wrote down in class a few days ago that i wanted to mention in my journal. i always forget about that stuff.
so: do you suppose there are people who wouldn't be able to pass a turing test? would that mean they were really dumb or just uncreative?
janeane's hair still looks like a really cheap wig, and she gets stupider every time i hear her talk.
there's a girl in my cyborg anthropology class who was wearing a shirt so thin and tight that you could see not only her nipples but her aureoles as well.
donna haraway considers teaching creationism child abuse - ie deliberately misinforming them. (those who teach creationism generally avoid exposure to scientific creation theory, which, if nothing else, deprives the child of the chance to think about the debate for themselves.) i'm not sure i would phrase it quite as strongly as she does, but i don't disagree.
talking about photographs and pictures led to a good example of the difference between fact and truth. while a photograph may show fact (the scene pictured did in fact exist at one point) it doesn't get at the truth of the situation at all; you can look at a photograph and make up your own story about it. based on a fact, but completely untrue. truth is all about context.
