Nov. 4th, 2005 08:31 amso stark got new ram last night, but forgot that his motherboard is excessively picky about such things, and ended up giving me some of it. there was my original half gb of pc2700 ram, a new pc2700 half gb with a heatsink, and a new 1gb of pc3200. if i put in all three in whatever order, i'd either get a long system beep and nothing would start up at all, or it would show me the first two start up screens and then hang. so i went through the various combinations of two sticks - at one point i even just had the original stick in and couldn't get it to work. finally i got everything seated correctly, so now i have 1.5gb of ram.
so i booted up the computer, and stark tried to open winamp, and it gave us an error and closed. so i tried to download itunes. i got everything set up, told it to put all my music files (most of which are on the e: drive, which is my data drive) in a library, also on the e: drive. it did about 30 files before giving me an error. then windows popped up with an "unsafe device removal" dialog. when i tried to browse the drive contents, it told me there were 33gb of files on the drive, which is correct. however, the only file it showed me was a 17mb excel file.
i rebooted the computer. everything was back. i tried to finish the itunes stuff. it did the same thing. 3 more reboots, all involving unplugging the cables from the drive, unplugging the cables from the board, and once using a different ide cable. at one point i put just the main drive in (partitioned into c: (system files) and d: (installed programs)) and couldn't get windows to boot up. got windows running with the e: drive plugged in again, tried to run scandisk. windows gave me an error during phase two and said it was unable to complete the scan.
the computer sees the drive. it knows what kind of drive it is (western digital), what size it is (200gb), and how much data is on it (33gb). it just doesn't see the actual data.
so.... am i screwed? what else can i try to at least get the data off that drive before chucking it out the window? we're going to try plugging it in to stark's computer to see if maybe his computer will recognize the data, but that's the only thing i can think of. maybe pull the main drive out and see if i can run knoppix and get to the files that way?
